Al terminar esta lección podrás:

  • Usar inversión con negativos: Never, Rarely, Seldom, Hardly, No sooner
  • Usar "Not only… but also" con inversión
  • Usar "Only when/if/after" con inversión
  • Usar "So/Such… that" con inversión

Never have I seen" (Never + have + I). Con tiempos simples, se usa do/did: "Rarely does she complain."

Never have I encountered such a complex problem.

/ˈnevə həv aɪ/

Never

Nunca me he encontrado con un problema tan complejo.

Normal: "I have never encountered…" → Inversión: "Never have I encountered…" El auxiliar salta antes del sujeto. Da énfasis dramático. Muy común en discursos, ensayos y literatura. Funciona con: never, rarely, seldom, scarcely.

Rarely does the government admit its mistakes.

/ˈreəli dʌz/

Rarely + do/does

Rara vez admite el gobierno sus errores.

Con presente simple: "does/do" + sujeto + infinitivo. "Rarely does she..." / "Seldom do they..."

Hardly had she arrived when the meeting started.

/ˈhɑːdli həd ʃiː/

Hardly/Scarcely... when

Apenas había llegado cuando empezó la reunión.

"Hardly/Scarcely + past perfect + when/before + past simple." Equivale a: "She had hardly arrived when the meeting started."

No sooner had he spoken than she disagreed.

/nəʊ ˈsuːnə həd/

No sooner... than

"No sooner + past perfect + than + past simple." Nota: siempre "than" (no "when"). Muy literario y enfático. Frecuente en narrativa y periodismo formal.

Not only / Only when / Such... that

Not only did they win, but they also set a new record.

/nɒt ˈəʊnli dɪd/

Not only... but also

Patrón: "Not only + auxiliar + sujeto + verbo, but (also) + sujeto + verbo." Muy retórico y efectivo en presentaciones.

Only after years of practice did she feel confident.

/ˈəʊnli ˈɑːftə/

Only after/when/if

"Only + expression of time/condition + inversión." Funciona con: only after, only when, only if, only then, only by. Añade énfasis a la condición necesaria. "Only by working together can we succeed."

Toca para ver

Such was the pressure that he resigned immediately.

/sʌtʃ wɒz ðə/

Such... that

"Such + was/were + el sustantivo + that…" Equivale a: "The pressure was so great that…" Inversión de sujeto-verbo con "such". También: "So great was the pressure that…" (So + adjetivo + inversión). Extremadamente literario.

Toca para ver

Little did they know what awaited them.

/ˈlɪtl dɪd ðeɪ nəʊ/

Little did... know

Poco sabían lo que les esperaba.

"Little did + sujeto + know" es una expresión narrativa clásica que crea suspense. Equivale a: "They didn't know at all what awaited them." Se usa siempre en pasado con "did". Muy común en narrativa literaria y cine.
