The integration of artificial intelligence into classrooms is no longer a distant prospect — it is already happening. AI-powered tools can now generate personalised exercises, provide instant feedback, and even detect when a student is struggling.
Proponents argue that adaptive learning technology can close achievement gaps by giving each student a tailored experience. A child who learns more slowly in a traditional class may thrive when lessons adjust to their own pace.
Critics, however, raise concerns about overreliance on technology and the potential erosion of critical thinking. If students receive answers before they have struggled with a problem, they may not develop the resilience needed for independent learning.
There are also ethical questions about data. AI systems require vast amounts of student information to function effectively. Who has access to this data? How is it stored? These questions have not yet been fully addressed by policymakers.
The debate is not about whether AI belongs in education — it almost certainly does. The more pressing question is how to harness its potential without losing sight of what education is ultimately for: developing curious, capable, and independent human beings.
