The Startup

When NovaPay was founded in 2021, it was described by the press as "the most promising fintech startup of the year." Venture capital funds were secured quickly, and a team of thirty engineers was assembled within months.

By 2023, however, the picture had changed. Growth targets were not being met, and two of the original co-founders had left the company. The board was informed that without further investment, operations would need to be scaled back significantly.

The CEO, Amara Okafor, refused to give up. A new strategy was drawn up, focusing on a narrower market. Non-essential spending was cut, and the team was restructured. It was painful, but necessary.

Six months later, NovaPay was approached by a European bank interested in acquiring its technology. Negotiations were conducted discreetly, and a deal was eventually agreed. The company was not saved in the way Amara had imagined — but it was saved.

"Startups are often spoken about as overnight success stories," she told an interviewer later. "What is rarely mentioned is the number of times you nearly collapse before you find the right path. Resilience is not a personality trait. It's a choice you make every day."
