The relationship between language and power is not a new subject of inquiry. George Orwell warned in 1946 that political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable. What has changed is our understanding of how subtle and pervasive these mechanisms can be.
The framing of an issue shapes the choices available to those who discuss it. Describing immigration as an "influx" or a "wave" evokes images of flooding — of something overwhelming and threatening. Describing the same movement as the "arrival" of people seeking safety produces an entirely different set of associations.
This selective deployment of metaphor is not always deliberate. Many of the linguistic choices we make are inherited — embedded in the vocabulary and discourse we absorb from childhood. To question them requires what linguists call critical language awareness — the capacity to examine the words we use as if from the outside.
Corporate and political euphemism offers particularly fertile ground for this kind of analysis. Workers are not "fired" but "let go" or "made redundant" — phrases that transfer agency away from those who made the decision. Military operations are described through abstraction: "collateral damage", "enhanced interrogation", "surgical strike."
To resist this is not a matter of pedantry. It is an act of civic participation. Those who control language do not merely describe reality — they construct it. And it is only by developing our own awareness of this that we can begin to think, and speak, for ourselves.
