El subjuntivo inglés — base verbal sin conjugar

El subjuntivo presente en inglés usa siempre la forma base del verbo sin "s", "es", "ing" ni auxiliares. "She be" (no "she is"), "he attend" (no "he attends"), "they have" (no "they have" — igual, pero sin tercera persona). Suena formal y se usa principalmente en inglés americano y textos académicos.

Verbos que desencadenan subjuntivo

I suggest / recommend that he apply.

Recomendación

Sugiero / recomiendo que él solicite.

Suggest, recommend, propose, advise + that + subjuntivo. "I suggest that the meeting be postponed." / "We recommend that she take the test." En inglés británico: "I suggest that he should apply." — igualmente correcto.

Es esencial que todos los candidatos estén presentes.

It is + adjetivo + that + subjuntivo. Adjetivos frecuentes: essential, important, necessary, vital, imperative, crucial. "It is vital that he receive treatment immediately."

Demand, insist, order, require, request + that + subjuntivo. "The manager insisted that the report be rewritten." / "They demanded that she resign."

Es hora de que seamos más honestos con nosotros mismos.

"Were" como subjuntivo pasado: "If I were you..." / "It's time that he were more careful." / "Were it not for you, I would have failed." Equivalente formal de "was" en estas estructuras.

Expresiones fijas

¡Dios salve al Rey! / ¡Larga vida a la libertad!

El subjuntivo fosilizado en frases hechas: "God save the Queen", "Long live the King", "Heaven forbid", "Be that as it may", "Come what may", "Suffice it to say". No se analizan — se aprenden enteras.

Were inversión formal

Si estuviera en tu posición, lo aceptaría.

Inversión formal con "were" sin "if": "Were I you..." / "Were it possible..." / "Were this to happen..." Equivalente muy formal de "If I were..." — típico en inglés legal y diplomático.

Alternativa con should

Sugiero que él debería asistir.

En inglés británico la alternativa con "should" es igualmente correcta: "I recommend that she should take the exam." = "I recommend that she take the exam." Ambas son aceptadas en Cambridge B2.

Concesión formal

Sea como sea / dicho esto, la decisión es definitiva.

"Be that as it may" = aunque eso sea verdad, lo que sigue es más importante. Concesión muy formal. "Be that as it may, we must move forward." Equivale a "Nevertheless" o "That said".

Diálogo real

Subjuntivo: ¿inglés americano o británico?
Americano: "I suggest that he be present." (subjuntivo puro)
Británico: "I suggest that he should be present." (con should)
Ambos: "I suggest being present." (gerundio — siempre correcto)
En exámenes Cambridge (B2 First): los tres son aceptados. En contextos muy formales o legales, el subjuntivo puro (sin should) es preferible. En conversación, el gerundio es el más natural.

Chair

I propose that the vote be postponed until we have more information. It is essential that all board members be present for such a decision.

Propongo que la votación se aplace hasta que tengamos más información. Es esencial que todos los miembros del consejo estén presentes para una decisión así.

I agree. Were we to proceed now, we would be acting without full data. I recommend that the legal team review the contract first.
