Al terminar esta lección podrás:

  • Usar "provided (that)", "as long as", "on condition that"
  • Expresar finalidad con "so that", "in order that", "in case"
  • Usar "even if", "whether or not" para condiciones sin importar
  • Distinguir "in case" de "if" — un error muy frecuente
Provided that ≠ if — matiz importante

"If" simplemente presenta una condición. "Provided that / As long as / On condition that" implican que la condición es NECESARIA para que ocurra el resultado — hay una exigencia o acuerdo. "You can use my car, provided that you fill it up." (condición explícita impuesta).

Vocabulario esencial

Conjunciones adverbiales avanzadas. Toca para ver diferencias y ejemplos.

Condición y restricción

provided (that) / providing (that)

/prəˈvaɪdɪd ðæt/

Condición necesaria

siempre que / con la condición de que

"You can borrow my notes, provided that you return them tomorrow." — Condición explícita y necesaria. "Providing you have a ticket, you can enter." Sin "that" es igualmente correcto.

Toca para ver

as long as

/æz lɒŋ æz/

Condición continua

mientras / siempre que

"As long as you keep practising, your English will improve." — Condición que debe mantenerse en el tiempo. "I'll support you as long as you're honest with me." Más común en conversación que "provided that".

Toca para ver

even if / whether or not

/ˈiːvən ɪf/

Condición irrelevante

incluso si / aunque sea

"Even if it rains, we'll go." — La condición no cambia el resultado. "Whether or not you agree, the decision is made." — Cubre ambas posibilidades. Diferente de "even though" (ya ha ocurrido).

Toca para ver

unless

/ənˈles/

Condición negativa

a menos que / salvo que

"Unless you apologise, I won't speak to you." = "If you don't apologise, I won't speak to you." "Unless" = "if not". NUNCA: "Unless you don't come..." (doble negativo incorrecto).

Finalidad y precaución

so that / in order that

/səʊ ðæt/

Finalidad

para que / con el fin de que

"She spoke slowly so that everyone could understand." — Propósito o finalidad. "In order that" es más formal y requiere modal: "in order that they may attend." En conversación se usa "so that" casi siempre.

Toca para ver

in case

/ɪn keɪs/

Precaución ≠ if

por si acaso / por si

"Take an umbrella in case it rains." ≠ "Take an umbrella if it rains." "In case" = como precaución ANTES de que ocurra. "If" = depende de si ocurre o no. "I'll call you in case I'm late." vs. "I'll call you if I'm late."

Toca para ver

lest (formal)

/lest/

Muy formal

por miedo a que / no sea que

"He spoke quietly lest he be overheard." — Equivalente muy formal y literario de "in case". "She kept the secret lest it cause harm." Sigue siendo subjuntivo. Solo en textos formales o literarios.

Toca para ver

now that / seeing that / given that

/naʊ ðæt/

Causa lógica

ahora que / dado que / visto que

"Now that you mention it, I see the problem." / "Given that we have limited time, let's focus on priorities." / "Seeing that everyone agrees, shall we proceed?" Introducen una razón o circunstancia nueva.

Diálogo real

"In case" vs. "if" — el error más frecuente:
✗ "I'll take a map if I get lost." → Tomé el mapa DESPUÉS de perderme (imposible)
✓ "I'll take a map in case I get lost." → Lo tomo ANTES por precaución
✓ "I'll use the map if I get lost." → Lo usaré SI me pierdo (condición futura)
"In case" siempre describe la PREPARACIÓN previa. "If" describe la ACCIÓN condicional.

Preparando un viaje al extranjero

I'm saving some cash in case the card doesn't work abroad. You should do the same, provided you have time to go to the bank.

Estoy guardando algo de efectivo por si la tarjeta no funciona en el extranjero. Deberías hacer lo mismo, siempre que tengas tiempo de ir al banco.

Jerry

Good idea. I'll go, as long as the queue isn't too long. Even if I can't today, I'll do it first thing tomorrow.

Buena idea. Iré, siempre que la cola no sea demasiado larga. Incluso si hoy no puedo, lo haré a primera hora mañana.

Lena
